Death By Oreo Cupcakes…Man, what a way to go!

Forget about death by chocolate, death by Oreo is where it’s at. Nothing against chocolate. I love it. But these cupcakes- they’re a triple blast of Oreo goodness.

I’ve been wanting to make Oreo cupcakes for awhile now. I blame Dairy Queen (an ice cream shop here in NJ) for introducing me to Oreo Blizzards all those years ago as a child. Ever since that first vanilla ice cream and Oreo dessert I’ve been hooked on Oreo Anything Dessert. Milk Shakes. Cake. Oreo Brownies… You name it. I like it. Needless to say, I can’t keep Oreos in our pantry because they vanish too quickly.

But I wanted to make these cupcakes. So I did what any good food blogger would do, I made them and shared with my family!  My high school and college age brothers downed 3 of these each – ah to be young! :)

I went for the straightforward approach and used a chocolate cake mix for the cupcakes. Feel free to make yours from scratch, but the star of the show is the Oreo so I didn’t feel like I was cheating anyone.

The frosting is even better than butter cream, says Rachel. I’ll have to set up a taste test I think before I can declare a clear winner, but it was definitely very good. If you decide to make the frosting and use a pastry bag to decorate your cupcake I recommend crushing the Oreos as fine as possible. I didn’t crush mine fine enough in my first batch of frosting and we had trouble squeezing it out of the bag.  Not that any of that deliciousness went to waste. Just went to the non-photo cupcakes :)

Death By Oreo Cupcakes

Ingredients

  • 1 package Oreo Cookies Double Stuff
  • 1 package Mini Oreo Cookies, for decoration
  • 1 package chocolate cake mix (mix according to directions on box)
  • + ingredients for chocolate cake mix
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Mix packaged cake mix according to directions but do not bake. Line cupcake tins with liner, place a regular size Oreo cookie in the bottom of each liner.
  3. Take 1/2 of remaining cookies and chop coarsely and add to cake mix. Fill the cupcake tins. Bake for 15 minutes (or according to box directions). While cupcakes are baking make the frosting.
  4. Cream together butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy. Add powdered sugar 1 cup at a time. Add vanilla extract. Take remaining regular size Oreo cookies and pulverize using either a blender or a rolling pin (putting the cookies in a bag first - pro tip). Add crushed Oreo's to frosting and mix to combine.
  5. After cupcakes have cooled frost and decorate with Mini Oreos.
  6. *Tip - If you'll be using a pastry bag to apply the frosting be sure you thoroughly crushed the Oreos otherwise you'll jam the bag and make a mess.
