Rachel’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Rachel’s chocolate chip cookies are a family favorite and often requested. So we decided it would be nice to share the recipe (i.e. I was in the mood for chocolate chip cookies and said “oh, we could blog about it!” – convenient excuse).

These cookies have a dirty little secret though. The recipe is lifted from the back of the Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chip package! The change though that makes them so great and makes them Rachel’s own is that she adds an extra cup of flour in. 🙂

The “I added an extra cup of flour in” line gets laughs at our family events, as my youngest brother Jim accidentally “Adds an extra cup” when he bakes. When he baked an apple pie for Thanksgiving a few years ago he accidentally added an extra cup of flour. As I sat eating it he asked “Is it good?” I replied “Oh yea.” As I took another bite, Jim blurted out “I added an extra cup of flour”. Suddenly, with that comment, all I could then taste was the extra flour and the different texture in the pie.

More recently, I think last year, Jim was baking brownies. Instead of adding 1/4 cup of oil he added 1 cup of oil. Those brownies thankfully were identified as atypical and not baked.

In any event, if Jim had made Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookies and accidentally added the extra cup of flour, he’d have stumbled upon our little secret. But he didn’t, so he’ll just have to be nice to his sister-in-law if he wants more cookies. =D

Speaking of Thanksgiving… I just realized today that is next week. Don’t ask me how that snuck up on me (Hurricane Sandy!) but I guess I better get my butt in gear and start menu planning. Are you hosting or going elsewhere? We host. Which for many people means a lot of work. But not so much for us. Our family is great, they bring a lot of the side dishes. All we need to do is cook the bird and be ready to go. Not too shabby.

Maybe next post I’ll share what our menu plan is – but first, I have to figure it out myself 🙂

Rachels Chocolate Chip Cookies


  • 3 1/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (sticks) butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups (12 oz) Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips


  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.
  3. Bake for 8 - 10 minutes or until edges just turn golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes, remove to wire racks and cool completely.

    These cookies look great! And I’m sure they’d be a welcome addition to any Thanksgiving table! We’re in charge of the side dishes this year, so we’ll be busy bees!

    Love these chocolate chip cookies–I too add 1 cup extra flour which makes the cookies not spread out so much and makes a softer cookie. Only thing I do different is to add lots of chopped walnuts. Have a wonderful and blessed THANKSGIVING!!
